A Fun Day Trip from Tippy Canoe Cabin: Bush's Beans Museum and Café

  • Posted on

When you stay at Tippy Canoe Cabin, you’re not just treated to breathtaking lake and mountain views — you’re also perfectly positioned for some of East Tennessee’s most charming day trips. On our recent getaway, we ventured over to the Bush’s Beans Visitor Center, Museum, and Café in Chestnut Hill — and we had such a great time, we just had to share the experience!

A Taste of Tennessee History

Located about 20 minutes from Tippy Canoe Cabin (an easy and scenic drive), Bush's Beans Visitor Center is a unique stop that blends a bit of history, some fun storytelling, and, of course, delicious food. The Visitor Center is set in the original A.J. Bush & Company general store, where the Bush family’s journey first began over 100 years ago.

Inside, we explored the Bush’s Museum, where you can learn the story behind this iconic brand, see vintage commercials featuring Duke the dog, and even get a behind-the-scenes look at how Bush’s Beans are made today. It’s a fun and interactive spot — perfect for families, couples, or anyone who loves a good hometown success story.

The Café — Worth the Trip on Its Own!

After the museum, we headed over to the Bush’s Family Café — and wow, it did not disappoint. The menu is packed with classic Southern comfort food, including their famous pinto bean pie (trust us, you have to try it — it’s like a sweet, nutty custard pie). We also enjoyed hearty entrees like fried catfish with hush puppies, pulled pork sandwiches, and, of course, side dishes featuring their legendary beans.

The portions are generous, the service is friendly, and the food feels just like a home-cooked meal.

Gift Shop Goodies

Before heading back to the cabin, we couldn’t resist browsing the gift shop. From Duke-themed souvenirs to specialty bean varieties you won’t find in stores, it’s a great place to pick up a unique reminder of your trip. We even found some adorable lake-themed merchandise — including the kitchen hand towels you might spot in the kitchen!

Why We Recommend It

Visiting Bush’s is more than just a quirky roadside stop — it’s a slice of authentic East Tennessee charm. It's educational, it’s fun, and the food is absolutely worth the drive. Plus, it’s an easy half-day adventure that leaves plenty of time to come back and relax by the lake at Tippy Canoe.

If you're planning your stay with us, we definitely recommend adding Bush's Beans Museum and Café to your itinerary. It’s another reason why East Tennessee isn’t just a place to stay — it’s a place to explore, savor, and enjoy.
